and human experience converge.

ROMITORIO DI PIENZA

A unique testimony of spiritual life

Volto di Cristo, Romitorio di Pienza

Hidden within the sandstone on the edge of Pienza (only 5 minutes from the centre of the town) lies a centuries-old hermitage — a sacred place shaped by Etruscan, Roman, and Christian hands.
First uncovered by the Moricciani family in 1989, who purchased what was then nothing more than a simple chicken coop, the Romitorio di Pienza continues to reveal its secrets through ongoing restoration and study.

Within its carved chambers remain extraordinary sculptures, ancient tombs, and traces of prayer — silent witnesses to centuries of devotion.

The discovery of forgotten treasure

In 1989, Luciano Moricciani purchased what was then nothing more than a simple chicken coop on the edge of Pienza. While cleaning and restoring the site with his son Carlo, they uncovered a forgotten treasure…

Today, the site is private property,  and part of the Azienda Agricola Cretaiole di Moricciani Carlo
