The Moricciani Family

A long-standing
family

For centuries, the Moricciani family has lived and worked in the hills of the Val d’Orcia, preserving the land and its traditions from one generation to the next. Today, as one of the oldest farming families still active in the valley, they continue to cultivate olive groves and vineyards, producing extra virgin olive oil and Orcia DOC wines with deep respect for nature.

The Family and the Romitorio

In 1989, Luciano Moricciani purchased what was then nothing more than a simple chicken coop on the edge of Pienza. While cleaning and restoring the site with his son Carlo, they uncovered a forgotten treasure: an ancient hermitage carved into the sandstone, layered with centuries of history.
Since then, knowledge of the Romitorio has been pieced together thanks to visiting archaeologists, historians, church documents, and oral traditions passed down through generations.
Today, the site is private property,  and part of the Azienda Agricola Cretaiole di Moricciani Carlo

Agriturismo Cretaiole

At their agriturismo Cretaiole, the family welcomes travelers into authentic rural life — sharing the rhythms, landscapes, and values that have shaped Tuscany for centuries. The ongoing restoration of the Romitorio di Pienza is a continuation of this legacy: protecting history, cultivating beauty, and keeping the spirit of the Val d’Orcia alive.
